Leonland - Leon Barnard
Chapter 2 > My New Home - Veghel, Holland
Veghel is a small, industrial city in the south of The Netherlands. I don't think there's much to do here, but the whole country is only about the size of New Hampshire, so I plan to travel around quite a bit.
Here's my house (the outlined one). I have 1 roommate now, I may get more later.
My living room. Cozy.
My humble, yet adequate room.
The H. Lambertuskerk church at night.
And here it is during the day.
The city center, probably my favorite part of Veghel.
The city center at night, right near the church. Notice all of the bikes, everyone bikes here.
Looks like a nice place to take a break, huh?

Hello:
I was stationed at Volkel AB during the 80's My wife is from veghel we go back every couple years. The scenes look good. What brings you there or are you a native? have a great day Lance

I too lived in Veghel; from 1977 - 1981. There was a restaurant, Marc's, where the proprietor served the best steak and wine I've ever tasted! I wonder if he still has his shop? I had a girlfriend of von Gehmert (like the village). In the past I tried to write but never received response...
So, figuring she "moved on," I stopped trying.
I did love living there, visiting, Uden, Eindhoven...the whole nation.
Cool pics...brought back memories.
Thank You
Dan Pinnell.

Hey Dan,
the restaurant you are talking about is called Marc's BBQ and is not in Veghel but in Uden!
The place is still in business and hasn't changed since you were there ;-)

I was stationed at Volkel A.B. from 1975-1977 and lived in Uden. I really did enjoy living there and meeting all of the wonderful Dutch people.
Marc's BBQ was awesome!!

...and I lived there last year, my favourite place was bike-path from Veghel, through Maria Heide, then left under the motorway and then... the paradise; bike road placed between the field and the river (direction to Uden). Just paradise! :-)

Yes Marcs BBQ is in Uden. It was very near to where I lived. And the bike path from Uden to Veghel remember it well. I have been back many times though through the years and it has all changed so much. There is now a major road connecting Eindhoven with Nijnmengan and Arham which runs just outside Veghel and Uden has changed so much in 20 years. I was there in 2002 with my son trying to show him lots of stuff but had trouble locating it. Lance Harvell at Volkel 1983-87 married to a local girl from Veghel for what will be 22 years in December

My daughter is marrying an Airman and they are moving to Vokel AB. Can anyone provide any information about the base (amenities, etc), and the best places to live in local towns? We haven't been able to find much on the Internet. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was at Volkel from 77-82. My wife is from Veghel. It was great place to live.
Anita- Things have changed I know, but there is no base housing at Volkel. Your daughter and son-in-law will live "on the economy". Most will live in Uden (closest to the base) or Veghel.
They will need to learn the money and the way things are done on the economy - like living as a Dutchman! The closest military full BX and commissary are an hours drive - if Brunsum is still open.
Most Dutch speak some Ebglish so language isn't a real issue - learning some does help.

My family lived in Veghel from 1970 to 1973. We lived at Karel Doormanstraat #33. When we first moved to Holland, we stayed at the the Golden Lion. My Dad would ride his bike to Vokel and we rode a VW minibus to the American school in Uden. Those were 3 1/2 great years for me!

I was stationed at VAFB, and lived in Uden from 1981 to 84. These pictures and comments have brought back some great memories for my wife, Tara, and me. We LOVED Marc's! Really miss the people, Shawarma's and beer!!!
