Leonland - Leon Barnard
Chapter 2 > Lillers et environs, France
I tagged along with a friend from France when she went home for a long weekend. She lives in Lillers, a small town in northern France. We also spent some time in some of the surrounding cities. It was only a few hours away, but had a distinctly different flavor from Holland.
The view out of the room that I stayed in, looking out behind the house.
The houses across the street on a gorgeous day.
This was unbelieveable. This church in Lillers was constructed in the 11th century.
Standing in front of a building that is nearly a thousand years old really made me feel insignificant.

I guess there's not really anything particularly special about this photo, I just like how it looks.
The bell tower in nearby Bethune, built to look out for invaders.
This is the Canadian memorial at Vimy, where Canadian troops defeated the Germans in a World War 1 battle to recapture a very strategic location.
A reminder of the emotional toll that war can take.
This was crazy. This is right near the battle line where both sides had miles of trenches and tunnels and would often dig under each others tunnels and explode mines.
The landscape here is literally covered with these bumps and craters from the Great War.
