Cesky Krumlov

Český Krumlov is a quaint, picturesque town in the southern part of the Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. If you ever visit Prague, I highly recommend taking a side trip here. It's about 3 1/2 to 4 hours away by bus or train and worth 24 - 36 hours of time. Although it would also be a great place to get away to for a week or more because of its tranquility (in the off-season, at least). In short, it feels like the setting for a medieval fairytale, thanks, in part, to it being restored and preserved by UNESCO. We visited there with my mom when she came to visit.

Denmark and Sweden

Ten years after I visited Scandinavia with my Dad, I returned for a brief trip with my wife to see the sights and visit some friends who were living in Sweden. We spent about two days in Copenhagen and then took a train up to Gothenburg, Sweden to visit our friends.

Prague Christmas Market

Today was the first day of the 2007 Prague Christmas Market (Vanocni Trhy). It was so festive and energetic. It was a side of Prague I've never seen before. Plus, the Jan Hus Memorial statue, which had been under construction since we've been here, was finally uncovered. The whole thing got me really excited to be here right now.

Return to the Netherlands

From July to December of 2000 I worked at Mars, B.V. in Veghel, a small town in the southern part of the Netherlands. When most people think of the Netherlands they think of Amsterdam - wild, uninhibited, coffee shops, the red-light district, etc. Veghel was nothing like Amsterdam, it was a very conservative agricultural and industrial area where people spoke about Amsterdam with disdain, if they spoke about it at all. I feel fortunate to have experienced a side of the Netherlands that most visitors don't see. When I moved to Europe in 2007 one of the first places I wanted to visit was the Netherlands. I wanted to show my wife all the places I got to know and relive some of my experiences there. You can see pictures from my life there in Chapter 2.

Visiting Amsterdam was always a treat for me when I lived in Veghel. It was about 2 1/2 hours away by bus and train. Our flight arrived in Amsterdam, so we spent a couple of days there before exploring the rest of the country. It was a delight, Amsterdam is a beautiful, dynamic city.

Many of the houses there are a bit off-kilter, making them even more interesting to look at.

The trams are nicer than when I lived there.

Vondelpark. An oasis.

You can probably guess where this was taken.

If you go, you should try the fries with mayo. Very tasty.

Lots of good cheese, too.

Utrecht is a lively city in the middle of the country that's home to the largest university in the Netherlands. Even on a Sunday there were quite a few people about (although you can't tell from this photo).

"Squirrel Mountain"

A great hike on a perfect autumn day in a recreation area about 30 minutes outside of Prague. Everybody disagreed on the name of the area, with Squirrel Mountain being my favorite of all the contenders. The scenery was great, but the delicious sausages and nice vibe at the top were even better.

Krakow

Soon after I moved to Prague my co-workers planned a train trip to Krakow, Poland and Ostrava, Czech Republic. My wife and I were happy to tag along since we had never been to Poland and the idea of an overnight train trip sounded romantic (in retrospect, perhaps it was, though quite uncomfortable).

After recovering from the overnight train ride, we did a bit of sight-seeing. Our first stop was Wawel Castle.

Some intricate detail from the impressive cathedral.

Next was Grand Square ("Rynek Glowny"), one of the largest central squares in Europe.

Banksy

Banksy, the (in)famous British graffiti/stencil artist held a show in L.A. that was the place to be that weekend. Hipsters galore, celebrities, and, um, me. Was Banksy himself there? He's never been seen in public, so I guess there's no way to know for sure. The painted elephant was certainly a sight, but I enjoyed his paintings the most.

The flyer for the show gave no exact address, but the big, painted truck (and the droves of hipsters) made it pretty clear where to go once you got close.

The most interesting sight, a live, painted elephant.

He got kind of boring to watch after a while.

I really liked most of his stuff. A nice mix of serious and whimsical.

Some of his smaller paintings.

This was painted on the back of a van that was in the middle of one of the two main rooms.

One of the few 3-D pieces.

The second room had some really great paintings.

"Applause."

Pretty powerful, huh?

"Punk's Not Dead", "Thug For Life."

"Sale Ends Today."

I love this one.

L.A. Tofu Festival

I'm a big fan of tofu. I was very curious to see what kind of dishes they'd come up with. Plus, I had to check out the tofu eating competition.

Road Trip from L.A. to Eugene, OR

My close friend Zach was taking the whole summer off to travel the country. He was going to visit his brother in Austin, then wanted to end up seeing his sister in Seattle, so he asked if I wanted to join him for part of his West Coast leg. We drove from LA to San Francisco, then took a detour to Grass Valley, CA to visit and stay with his uncle. From there, we headed back to the 5 and trekked all the way to Eugene, Oregon. I stayed with him there for a day and a half, then flew home. He stayed there a few more days, then rode up to Seattle. We put a lot of miles on our rental car, saw the landscape change a lot, and spent time with some great people along the way.

20676 miles on the odometer in Pasadena, just as we left my street.

Our first stop, the beach town of Carpinteria, about 90 miles northwest.

Our next stop was lunch at a well-known taco spot in Santa Barbara, La Super-Rica.

California Strawberry Festival

While en route to a potential wedding venue in Camarillo, we were distracted by signs reading "Strawberry Festival" with large arrows pointing west. After our venue viewing, we followed the signs to the very crowded and overblown annual Strawberry Festival in Oxnard. We pigged out on many strawberry delights and left feeling stuffed and satisfied.

One of the first things we saw, a giant sign for strawberry pizza. It sounded too intriguing to resist.

It turned out to be not quite as interesting as we had hoped, but it was quite tasty. In fact, we got another slice on our way out. We figured that a strawberry smoothie was the right beverage to have with it.

Road Trip up Highway 1 in California

I can't think of a better road trip than driving from L.A. to San Francisco via the coast-hugging California Highway 1. My Dad flew out from Wisconsin to visit me in L.A. and we spent two days covering the 600 or so miles of varied terrain and fantastic vistas. We stopped at several places along the way, some were populated beach towns, others were lonely rest stops, as a result the photos that I took tend to favor the brief segments of time when we were at a relative stand-still. The pictures in my mind, however, are of rolling hills and jagged cliffs passing by at 60 m.p.h.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island is a magical place. It's an 21-mile long by 8-mile wide island that sits about 20 miles off the coast of Long Beach, California. The only real city on the island is Avalon, which has about 3,200 full-time residents. You can get there by hydrofoil ferry or helicopter. There's also an airport, but it's only used for getting goods on to and off of the island. It's a 45-minute boat ride, but feels like a thousand miles away from LA. Cars aren't allowed on the island, so many tourists rent bikes or just walk to get around in Avalon. There's also hiking, golf, and glass-bottom boat tours. Even though it's a tourist destination, it's remote and mellow enough not to be tacky or over-the-top. We were there for a day and a half and had a fantastic time. I highly recommend the trip if you ever get the chance.

The seas were very choppy on the way there, so the sight of land was a relief.

More of the island comes into view.

Avalon. Yep, that's pretty much all of it.

L.A. Auto Show

L.A. has to be one of the (if not the) automotive capitals of the U.S. and I heard that the annual auto show here was supposed to be pretty good. I'm not super into cars, but I do appreciate good design and have been known to marvel at impressive technological accomplishments (like accelerating 2 tons of metal to 60 mph in under 3 seconds). I went to an auto show in Chicago many years ago and enjoyed it, so I decided to check out L.A.'s, which lived up to the hype. Here are some of my favorites from the show.

The new BMW M6. Nice. They also had an M5 on display that you could actually sit in.

A three-wheeled Volkswagen concept car. Eh, didn't really do it for me.

A very agressive-looking Lexus concept.

The Ford GT. One of the few eye-catching American cars there.

A tricked-out Kia. Not bad.

A sweet Ferrari. The Italians ruled, as usual.

A very fast-looking Lamborghini.

The most-hyped car of the show, the $1.2 million Bugatti Veyron. 1000 Horsepower says it all.

The new Porsche Cayman. I'd settle for one of these.

A classic Porsche Carrera. Very cool.

These Dodge Chargers looked pretty tough.

A futuristic-looking Maserati concept.

I hit 100,000 miles on the way home. Time to start thinking about a new car (a BMW M5, perhaps)? Probably not. My car will hopefully be good for another 100k.

California Avocado Festival

I couldn't have dreamt of something like this when I lived in Wisconsin. But in Southern California, it's an annual event. I had passed through Carpinteria before, but had been looking for an excuse to spend more time in the mellow coastal town just south of Santa Barbara. Overall, the festival was a bit less ambitous that I had hoped, but it was a fun experience nonetheless.

Definitely one of the highlights. Lots of fresh, tasty guacamole.

They even had avocado ice cream. It wasn't too bad.

Hermosa Beach

I love the beach. I think I'll try to visit all of the beaches in Southern California while I'm here. I recently had a free weekend day, so I somewhat randomly picked Hermosa Beach from the list of So. Cal. beaches. I had driven by it once before and had meant to return and give it my full attention. One of my favorite parts of this trip, which I didn't capture with my camera, was skateboarding along the boardwalk. I did capture some other areas of the boardwalk while I was walking, along with some nice views from the really long pier. There's nothing fancy about Hermosa Beach, so I think it could be easily overlooked, but I think that's a big part of what makes it so pleasurable.

The pier here is really long. You get a nice view at the end.

After I checked out the pier and skateboarded, I walked South along the boardwalk. I spied someone chilling out in their house looking out the window at the ocean. It looked funny to just see a foot.
