March 12 in 12 project
I'm not quite ready to start getting back into shape, physically (next month?!), but I'm starting to get back into shape, creatively. My January project was a lot of fun and today I was thinking about how my enthusiasm for my wonderful new city has waned - dulled by the monotony of work and the gloom of Winter. But the beauty is still here - all around me, in fact. I just need to become more attuned to it. So, this month, I've decided that I'll focus on sharpening my awareness of the world around me. My "12 in 12" project/goal for March will be:
Take 10 photos each day and post one of them online.
Here's my first photo of the month (I know I skipped yesterday, but, whatever).

There was some great light at this cool brunch place we went to today and a funky Communist-era (maybe?) phone in the windowsill. Perfect ingredients for a nice photo, huh? The hard part was fighting off the urge to make it look like what I thought a nice photograph is supposed to look like. I experimented with turning the contrast all the way up and with giving it an antique, faded look. But I decided that if I want to become a good photographer, it couldn't hurt to try to forget what I think I know about photography. So, I didn't do anything to this photo. No cropping or Photoshop effects for now. I'm pretty happy with the original anyway, I like the colors and I think the composition isn't bad (it's got a little bit of the "rule of thirds" going on).
I'm a little intimidated about tomorrow, since it's a regular work day and it'll take some effort to notice the things that I see all the time. But, of course, I'm also looking forward to it.
